Here’s a quick preview of the 2010 FIFA World Cup Group H.

Spain: Right behind Brazil, Spain is the second favorite to take the Cup. With an international record of 45 – 1  (35 wins, 1 loss to US in ‘09 Confederations Cup, 10 win streak leading up to the World Cup) they are a team that is playing with confidence and purpose. With plenty of talent to go around at all positions, their only real concerns are the injuries to Fabregas, Torres, Hernandez, and Iniesta which will determine whether coach Vincente del Bosque will run a 4-4-2 or 4-5-1. The only other real concern for Spain will be their ability to handle the South African weather and pitches. Spain should easily win this Group.

Switzerland: Appearing in their 9th World Cup, the Swiss expect a much different outcome than their 2006 World Cup when they became the first team in World Cup history to be eliminated without conceding a single goal (they were eliminated by Ukraine on penalty kicks). Now under the guidance of German coach Ottmar Hitzfeld (who has won more major trophies – 18 – than any other coach at the 2010 World Cup) the Swiss have an exciting blend of solid veterans and talented youth.

Honduras: Appearing in only their 2nd World Cup (first in 1982) Honduras needs to put their shaky qualifying play behind them and agressively try to win games. This naturally depends on coach Reinaldo Rueda’s strategy. Will he continue with his conservative 4-5-1 play to not lose formation, or a more agressive 4-4-2 play to win with Carlos Pavon (their all time leading scorer) as their second attacker. Their opening game (and strategy) against Chile will set the tone for their tournament.

Chile: Making their first appearance in the World Cup since 1998, and having not won a World Cup match since 1962, Chile enters South Africa with the youngest of the South American teams, finishing second in their qualifying group only 1 point behind international powerhouse Brazil. Coach Marcelo Bielsa’s agressive 4-3-3 set up generated more qualification wins than any other South American team, including an impressive win over Argentina. Chile’s impressive qualification performance included a Group high 32 goals, 10 of which were scored by their talented center forward Humberto Suazo. This performance in th equalifying Group has led t oraised expectation for the team in South Africa.
