Here’s a quick preview of the 2010 FIFA World Cup Group G.

Brazil :The reigning #1 ranked team in the World, with a stellar record over the past 18 months, Brazil is not only the favorite to win the Group, but also to win the World Cup. When you have so much talent that you leave players like Ronaldhino off your squad, its a good bet that you’ll have abundance of goal scoring capability (Fabiano, Nilmar, Robihno, and Grafite) and depth at every position. Coach Dunga has also brought a new defensive style that the Brazilians have adapted with excellent results, currently holding both the Copa America and Confederations Cup. Add in one of the best goal keepers in the world (Julio Cesar) and it’s easy to see why Brazil are the Cup favorites.

Korea DPR : Currently ranked #106 in the world, North Korea is considered by many to not score a single point. Unless of course you listen to the Vice President of the North Korea FA who boldly claimed that they will win the World Cup. This being their first appearance in 44 years, their only strength seems to be that none of their opponents will know much (if anything) about them.

Cote d’Ivoire :The Ivory Coast has one of the best teams in terms of overall talent, and was considered to be a strong contender against the group’s heavyweights, until a freak accident  (fracture/broken right arm) appears to have ended team leader Didier Drogba’s World Cup (he has not yet been officially been ruled out). Having led Chelsea to the Premier League title (with 29 goals in 32 matches), it amy fall to his Chelsea teammate Salomon Kalou to step up with more of the scoring. The presence of international football veterans the Toure brothers (Kolo – defense and Yaya – Midfield) will provide the team’s leadership, should Drogba eventually be ruled out.

Portugal :Curently Ranked #3 in the world, with one of the best players in the world (Cristiano Ronaldo) on their squad, Portugal should be one of the favorites to win the Cup. However, their inconsistency almost did them in, having to qualify by winning a playoff game against Boznia-Herzegovina. Recently dealt another setback when winger Nani was ruled out due to an injured collarbone, Portugal’s ultimate fate may be decided in their first game against the Ivory Coast who will be challenging them for the #2 spot in the Group.
