Let’s take a quick look at the teams in the FIFA 2010 World Cup Group F.
Italy: The defending World Cup champions appear to have drawn the easiest Group in the tournament and should have no problem getting through to the next round. The Italians strength is in their midfield, defense, and the fact that they have possibly the best goalkeeper in the world in Gianluigi Buffon. Due to a series of injuries in the midfield, and an unspectacular offense, Coach Lippi has been experimenting with different formations over the last few games (including 1, 2 or 3 strikers) in order to get the right balance. Although they have not played particularly well against the top teams since winning in 2006, this is the World Cup, and the Italians know how to rise to the occassion.
Paraguay: Paraguay was very impressive during qualifications beating Argentina, adn finishing only 1 point behind Brazil. With the majority of the teams stars playing on the leading European teams, they had the potential to not only challenge the Italians for the Group, but also to advance beyond the round of 16. Unfortunately, after qualifying, their fortunes have taken a turn for the worse when star player Slavador Cabanas was shot at a nightclub. A series of lackluster performances followed, but ended with an encouraging 2-0 win over Greece. Paraguay’s fate depends on which team shows up.
New Zealand: This is New Zealand’s first return to the World Cup since 1982, and they will be looking to make the most of their opportunity in this relatively easy Group. A highly disciplined team composed of solid (but not outstanding) players do not have any game dominating stars, or an especially strong position. New Zealand prefers a direct, and physical game that will make every opponent earn their victory, especially since they are unlikely to score no more than the occassional goal themselves.
Slovakia: Slovakia is a solid team that qualified by winning their Group. However, their lack of offensive creativity and a shrewd midfield capable of genertaing goal scoring opportunities will leave them at the mercy of more capable teams. Not expected to advance out the Group, their defining moment will be their performance against Paraguay.
