Here’s a quick preview of the FIFA 2010 World Cup Group E.
Netherlands: The Dutch are by far the most talented team in this group. Unfortunately, they are also the most unpredictable and inconsistent team. The Dutch have more striking power than any other team in the entire World Cup, due to their unique ability to grow attackers as easily as tulips. Unfortunately for the Dutch, they are not nearly as skilled on defense and their goaltending could be a major problem. However, having the ability to completely dominated Italy, France and Germany, then disintegrate and lose to Russia, discipline will be what determines how far the Dutch are able to advance.
Denmark: Having missed qualifying for the World Cup in 2006, Denmark is back with a team that has a terrific balance of experience, youth, spirit and work ethic. Lacking any big name stars, Denmark thrives on teamwork with quality players at every position, and the longest serving team manager (Morten Olsen) at the World Cup, providing consistent leadership. Having succeeded, then ulitmately crashing with a team of stars in the 2002 Cup, this year’s squad has the talent and temperment to advance where their predecessor’s have failed.
Japan: Japan has been a consistent qualifier to the World Cup, without actually having much of an impact on the Cup itself. The team’s strength is in the midfield, but lacks the strength and pace on offense to cause any trouble for the rest of the group. Also, their lack of stature ondefense will make them vulnerable to opponents aerial attacks.
Cameroon: For a nation raised on soccer, missing the 2006 World Cup was a bitter disappiontment, and not qualifying for South Africa would have been completely unacceptable. Playing good enough to win their qualifying Group, Cameroon has the talent to raise their game to a higher level. With a potent offense built around the team’s star Samuel Eto’o and fellow striker Pierre Webo, Cameroon thrives on their constantly attacking style. Of course, this does tend to put extra pressure on the defense, anchored by their veteran defender, and National Hero Rigobert Song. He’ll need all his experience to keep opponents from getting easy goals. This team has the talent (young and old) and discipline to go deep into the tournament.
