Here’s a quick preview of the 2010 FIFA World Cup Group D, which has earned the nickname, the Group of Death, due to the fact that each team has won their qualifying group.

Germany: Three time World Cup Champions and 7 time finalist, Germany is a perinneal favorite, but loss of their captain, and star midfielder, Michael Ballack will be a glimmer of hope to their opponents. The shift in responsibility to Sami Khedira and Mesut Ozil will be vital to Germany’s long term success, as will the ability of their yet to be named startin ggoalkeeper. But remember, Germany has never failed to advance into the second round.

Australia: Having won the Asian qualifying group, Australia is looking to improve on their appearance in the round of 16 back in 2006. Historically known for their physical style of play, Dutch head coach Pim Veerbeek will be bringing a more disciplined, passing oriented team led by their talented forward Harry Kewell (who is coming off a stellar 14 goal season with Galatasary). In a group that will see more than its fair share of draws, expect Australia to be very hard to beat.

Serbia: 2010 represents Serbia’s first trip to the World Cup as an independent nation (all 10 previous appearances have been as the former Republic of Yugoslavia. Unbeaten in their last four games and with a defense built around Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic and Manchester United’s Nemanja Vidic, scoring against Serbia will not be easy. The closest thing to a long shot in Group D, Serbia would probably have very little trouble advancing from any other Group.

Ghana: Impressive in their 2006 World Cup debut (losing in the round of 16 to Brazil), Ghana hopes to capitalize on the home continent (African) support to get them even further. Solid at the midfield with Michael Essien and Sulley Muntari, Ghana’s biggest challenge will be their less talented front line and defense performs, especially with a host of younger players who will be looking to make a nome for themselves on the international stage.
